Junpei the Snatcher

Atsu: What do we have here?
Ronin: Looking for something?
Atsu: Are you?

Ronin: Junpei the Snatcher. He and his men are holed up somewhere behind this rock.
Atsu: Then we’ve caught the same scent. What do you know about him?
Ronin: He captures samurai and holds them for ransom. Say, have we met before?

Atsu: No.
Ronin: Huh. Well, why don’t we take him together? Split the bounty. Follow me.

Ronin: What’s your name?
Atsu: Mayumi.
Ronin: I swear I’ve seen you before, Mayumi.

Ronin: Now I remember where I’ve seen you… On a bounty poster. You killed the Snake. You’re worth more than this dog we’re chasing.
Atsu: Won’t have to split the bounty now. Now to find Junpei.

Atsu: That’s the last of them.
Matsumae: Over here! Cut me free! I’ll pay you! Finally, I can’t die in this hole. Come on.
Atsu: Hurry before anyone else sees us.

Matsumae: They held us for ransom.
Atsu: How much were you worth?
Matsumae: Enough that they were dragging their feet. Your money’s in my saddlebags. Follow me.

Junpei: That’s my prisoner.
Atsu: Junpei the Snatcher.
Junpei: Most sought after bounty in all of Ezo.

Atsu: Don’t know about that.

Atsu: Now you’re Junpei the Dead.

Kojiro: Looks like Junpei bit the dust.
Atsu: Just another day in Ezo.
Kojiro: You catch on quick.

One-Eye Moritaka

Saito Outlaw A: Those merchants we attached last night — I have never made so much coin.
Saito Outlaw B: We keep following One-Eye Moritaka and we’ll have more mon than we know what to do with. He says he’s going to build a stronghold to serve Lord Saito.
Saito Outlaw A: They’ll both have my blade. We can rule this land.

Moritaka: Be quick, be precise! If your arrow strikes true, you live. If not, you lose an eye, or worse.
Saito Outlaw: How do you fight with only one eye?
Moritaka: I stay angry from the memory of that day. My blade faltered.

Atsu: That must be One-Eye Moritaka.
Moritaka: Now I have to be twice as good as the enemy.
Saito Outlaw: And twice as rich.

Moritaka: If you serve Lord Saito, your loyalty will be rewarded. He is a great man. His wisdom will lead us to victory.
Atsu: Let’s see how much you’re worth.

Kojiro: Ah, you crossed off One-Eye Moritaka!
Atsu: Guess he didn’t see me coming.
Kojiro: Good one. Here’s your pay.

Old Lady Yae

Settler: Friend! Come rest your legs. Tea’s made sweeter with company. Sit. You look like you need a cup.
Atsu: Tea from a stranger in the woods? Do I look like a fool?
Settler: No, you look like a lonely traveller.

Atsu: I know who you are… Old Lady Yae.
Yae: (Chuckles) Then we can stop with the niceties.

Yae: Whoever you are… You won’t last… No one survives out here…
Atsu: Because of people like you.

Kojiro: Oh, Yae. Such a sweet old bird, wasn’t she?
Atsu: Deadly too.
Kojiro: Nobody’s perfect.

Bear Man Chikatoshi

Atsu: On the rocks. Is that blood? Leaves in his clothes. Must have crawled here. There’s a blood trail leading into the woods. Who did this? Mauled. This ‘Bear Man’ Chikatoshi is living up to his name. The blood leads deeper into the woods. Those wounds look fresh. Are those claw marks? What happened here?

Atsu: Where did she come from?
Bear Man: My bear! What have you done to her! You’ll pay for this!
Atsu: ‘Bear Man’ Chikatoshi. You beast attacked me!

Bear Man: And I’ll finish the job!

Atsu: Huh. He used a bear to do his dirty work. I’m sorry it had to end this way.

Kojiro: You got to ‘Bear Man’ Chikatoshi — impressive.
Atsu: The man made a bear do all the work. He wasn’t much of a challenge.
Kojiro: Here’s your reward nonetheless.

Inokichi the Hungry

Settler: Wanderer! Please — a moment of your time.
Atsu: It’s dangerous to call out to strangers. I could be a thief.
Settler: (Scoffs) I have nothing left to take. Inokichi the Hungry and his men stole our food. He’s hoarding it in the mill. Turned the place into a stronghold for clan Saito.

Atsu: Inokichi? I have his bounty.
Settler: Others have gone after him, but none have come back alive.
Atsu: When did you last eat?

Settler: Two days ago.
Atsu: Hopefully, this will hold you over until I deal with Inokichi.
Settler: I… Thank you, stranger.

Atsu: Clan Saito banners…
Settler: This is our food — from our soil.
Saito Outlaw: The soldiers need it more. To free you.

Settler: Free us? Inokichi steals our crops, while our families starve!
Saito Outlaw: Keep talking, and going hungry will be the least of your worries.
Atsu: That must be Inokichi the Hungry.

Inokichi: Our army will fight on a full stomach. Tonight, we feast. A bounty hunter? No… A ghost.
Atsu: You’re coming with me.
Inokichi: Enough. Guards!

Atsu: Don’t stand in my way.
Inokichi: Kill her! Guards!
Atsu: There’s nobody left to save you.

Inokichi: That farmer put you up to this, didn’t he?
Atsu: Desperate people fight back.
Settler: Apologies for the delay. So, this is Inokichi the Hungry? I thought he’d be thinner. Here is your payment. As for this one, he won’t be eating well tonight.

Inokichi: (Grumbles) Talk while you can. Ezo will soon belong to Lord Saito.

Settler: Stranger! A moment? First, you give me food and now… We can never repay you.
Atsu: It’s fine. I did it for my own reasons.
Settler: Thank you again, stranger.

Iron Chuta

Ronin: Somebody help! Those dogs almost had me.
Atsu: They could smell the blood. From you leg — and the dead Matsumae over there.
Ronin: I had nothing to do with that.

Atsu: Those wounds weren’t made by dogs.
Ronin: (Groans) Fine. It was me — and Iron Chuta. He said Lord Saito would pay us for their heads.
Atsu: Where is Chuta now?

Ronin: Probably back at our camp to the north of here. Past the river. Bastard left me to die. Claimed there was nothing he could do. If you find him, run him through. Wait — aren’t you going to help me?
Atsu: I killed the dogs, didn’t I?

Atsu: Looks like a dead samurai. Matsumae. Died recently. Killer should still be nearby.
Chuta: It’s you…
Atsu: Hello, Chuta.

Chuta: It’s Iron Chuta now.
Atsu: I spared your life.
Chuta: You humiliated me. Called me stupid.

Atsu: I stand by what I said.
Chuta: I’m a real bounty hunter now. I killed those samurai. And others.
Atsu: I know. I met your partner. The one you left to die.

Chuta: He didn’t show me the proper respect.
Atsu: Because you’re pathetic.
Chuta: Draw your sword! We’ll see who is pathetic!

Chuta: You’ll regret humiliating me. I’ve been training for this.
Atsu: It wasn’t enough.
Chuta: With your death, everyone will respect me.

Atsu: A better death than you deserved.

Kojiro: Dealt with Iron Chuta, I see. Even after you spared his life.
Atsu: He got one last good fight. And I don’t make the same mistake twice.
