Contradiction – After 6PM

AT THE GEORGES AND THE DRAGON PUB

Jenks (for himself): So Simon did know Kate at college, but why would he lie about that? Wonder if Rebecca is working at the pub tonight…

Finding the Broken Window

Jenks (for himself): How did that window get broken?

Finding the Out Building

Jenks (for himself): Hmmm. Padlocked door. (Using the Silver Key)

Finding the Cardboard Mask

Jenks (for himself): Wonder who’s mask this is? Rebecca’s or Ryan’s?

INSIDE THE PUB

Rebecca: Sorry, what can I get you?
Jenks: Detective Inspector Jenks. Rebecca, is it?
Rebecca: Yeah?
Jenks: There’s been an incident in the village, I’m conducting an investigation. Could I ask you a few questions, please?
Rebecca: Right… Come through.

INTERVIEWING REBECCA

Rebecca: What’s it about?
Jenks: There’s been an unexplained death locally, not sure if you’ve heard?
Rebecca: The student?
Jenks: Yes.
Rebecca: Yes, it was dreadful news.
Jenks: You’re married to Ryan, one of Atlas leaders, yes?
Rebecca: I supposed I am, yes.
Jenks: Well, I just wanted to ask a few questions about Kate and Atlas, if that’s OK?
Rebecca: I don’t know if I’ll be able to answer any of them but… sure.

Asking about Kate Vine’s Death

Jenks: Did you know Kate?
Rebecca: Not very well, she came in a few times, but she was quite a moody… person. You could tell she had problems.
Jenks: When was the last time you saw her?
Rebecca: Friday. She popped in for a minute.
Jenks: And when was that?
Rebecca: Seven-ish.
Jenks: Was she on her own?
Rebecca: I didn’t see who she was with, she put £20 on the bar and then left.
Jenks: What was that for?
Rebecca: A breakage presumably.
Jenks: £20, just for a beer glass?
Rebecca: Well, she was very drunk, she just put it on the bar and then walked out.
Jenks: WAS there a broken glass?
Rebecca: Not that I noticed, but she was a strange girl.

Asking about Kate Vine’s Licence

Jenks: Have you seen this before?
Rebecca: No, sorry.
Jenks: So you didn’t know if Kate had lost it?
Rebecca: No idea.

Asking about Simon’s homebrew

Jenks: Know anything about Simon Thompson’s homebrew?
Rebecca: Does he make homebrew?
Jenks: Apparently.
Rebecca: No, we do buy from a microbrewery, but we don’t usually buy from kitchen breweries.

Asking about Freedom Necklace Card

Jenks: Do you recognise this?
Rebecca: I’ve seen students wearing them, has some sort of meaning, doesn’t it? I forget what it is now.
Jenks: Seen anyone wearing one recently?
Rebecca: Not that I can remember.

Asking about Pub Broken Window

Jenks: How did the window get broken, round the back?
Rebecca: I don’t actually know, someone said two girls were arguing outside. I found out after they’d gone.
Jenks: When was this?
Rebecca: Last Friday, just after we opened, about half past six. I taped over it until I could get it fixed. We don’t want people getting cut and suing us.
Jenks: Does that sort of thing happen a lot? Arguments?
Rebecca: No, not really, I’m quite strict when it comes to barring clients I don’t think are… suitable.

Asking about Cardboard Mask

Jenks: Do you know what this is?
Rebecca: Oh, you’ll have to ask Ryan about that.
Jenks: So this is Ryan’s?
Rebecca: It’s to do with one of Ryan’s methods on the course.
Jenks: Go on…?
Rebecca: Well… Masks allow you to play at being someone different for a while. Students find it quite liberating.
Jenks: So this would be for a student?
Rebecca: I think that one’s Ryan’s, but students do wear them, yes.

Finding a contradiction: “Kate gave Rebecca 20 Pounds for a breakage. (Kate Vine’s Death) x Doesn’t know who broke the window. (Broken Pub Window)

Jenks: So, you said Kate gave you £20 for a breakage but you didn’t have a breakage?
Rebecca: That’s right.
Jenks: Do you think the payment could have been for the broken window? Could it have been Kate who was arguing?
Rebecca: Well… I suppose it could have been, yeah. Could have been Kate, you’re probably right, yeah.
Jenks: But you don’t know who she was arguing with?
Rebecca: No, I’m not sure.
Jenks: I’ll ask around.

Jenks (for himself): Not realising Kate broke the window? Rebecca really should have worked that out before now. Unless she did. But why would she lie about that?

LET’S GO BACK TO EMMA…

Jenks: A few more questions, if you don’t mind.

Asking about Pub Broken Window

Jenks: Know anything about a broken window at the pub round the back?
Emma: The pub? Broken window at the back… Yeah, I saw it was broken.
Jenks: When was that?
Emma: I was in the pub on Monday with a college friend.

Asking about Cardboard Mask

Jenks: Ever seen this before?
Emma: No, I haven’t, sorry. I think I’d have remembered it.

Asking about A Pub Argument

Jenks: Did you hear about an argument in the pub last Friday?
Emma: No, I wasn’t there.
Jenks: You weren’t in the village?
Emma: No, I went home last… last Thursday night, actually, to see my parents.
Jenks: But you do visit the pub?
Emma: Oh, yeah, I know Rebecca quite well, we all went there quite a bit after college.
Jenks: Be back later on, if that’s OK.

… AND SIMON

Asking about Pub Broken Window

Jenks: Do you know anything about a broken window at the pub?
Simon: No, I don’t really go to the pub very often, I’m not exactly a pub person.

Asking about Cardboard Mask

Jenks: Have a look at this, know anything about that?
Simon: I haven’t seen this one, but it looks a lot like an Atlas mask. We use them for some of the workshops and stuff.
Jenks: Really? How?
Simon: Well, you have to say something boastful or arrogant. You do it first without the mask, then you say it with the mask.
Jenks: And the point is…?
Simon: Well, it’s easier when you have the mask on, isn’t it? People are not as afraid to be free about themselves.
Jenks: How did you find out about Atlas?
Simon: It was advertised. Actually, I think I’ve still got… This was the advert that was at my college. To be honest, I’ve learned more in three months at Atlas than I did in three years at business school.
Jenks: Can I keep that?
Simon: Yeah, go for it.

Jenks (for himself): I suppose that might be useful as a conversational starter.

Asking about A Pub Argument

Jenks: Know anything about an argument in the pub last Friday?
Simon: No, I didn’t go to the pub last Friday.
Jenks: What did you do after the course?
Simon: Just went home. Came here, came straight back.
Jenks: OK. That’s it for now. Thank you.

ANOTHER WORD, EMMA?

Asking about Atlas Advertising Poster

Jenks: What do you know about Atlas?
Emma: I know that it’s a business course. I went with Simon when he first went but it wasn’t really my thing.
Jenks: How often did you go?
Emma: Just the once.
Jenks: And you decided it wasn’t for you?
Emma: Yeah, I’d been to something similar so I decided it wasn’t for me.
Jenks: Thank you. Probably be back later.

MEETING JAMES

James: Who is it?
Jenks: I’m a police officer, Detective Inspector Jenks. It’s alright, you can carry on if you want.
James: I was just going.
Jenks: I’m investigating a death in the village, Kate Vine. There was a death recently and…
James: I know. I knew her.
Jenks: Well, could I ask you a few questions please?
James: Bit dark.
Jenks: Well, if you give me your name and address I’ll come later on… Where do you live?
James: Farm house.
Jenks: And what’s your name?

TO ABBEY FARM

Jenks (for himself): According to the map, Abbey Farm is over the road there.

Finding Black Mirrors inside the Small Greenhouse

Jenks (for himself): Picture frames, with black painted glass… Very interesting.

INTERVIEWING JAMES

Jenks: Could I ask you a few more questions, please?
James: Didn’t take you long.
Jenks: Haven’t got much time. Just close the door, shall I?
James: Where do you want to sit?
Jenks: Oh, anywhere’s fine. I didn’t quite catch your name.
James: James. Sit there.
Jenks: Thank you, James.
James: Why are you asking me about Kate Vine?
Jenks: Routine. You know Simon, don’t you? Thompson?
James: Why, what did he say?
Jenks: That you all went to college together, you and Kate. That’s right?
James: Might have done.
Jenks: Right… Good enough.

Asking about Kate Vine’s Death

Jenks: When was the last time you saw Kate Vine?
James: Can’t remember.
Jenks: How did you know her?
James: Through Simon, his girlfriend was mates with her. Saw her round college a few times.
Jenks: Did you socialise with her much?
James: Nah, she wasn’t my type…

Asking about Kate Vine’s Licence

Jenks: Did you know whether Kate had lost this or not?
James: Nah, no idea.

Asking about Unlocked Bicycle

Jenks: What do you know about Simon’s bike?
James: What bike?
Jenks: You haven’t seen him on a bike?
James: I haven’t seen HIM.
Jenks: When was the last time you saw him?
James: Around a month ago.

Asking about Simon’s homebrew

Jenks: Have you ever tried Simon’s homebrew?
James: Thompson’s Tar? Yeah, I’ve tried it.
Jenks: Did he sell it?
James: Well, not to me, not for money anyway. We used to trade stuff.
Jenks: What did you trade?
James: I make a nice herbal tea as it happens. Him and his girlfriend were into it.
Jenks: What was his beer like?
James: Lethal!
Jenks: Strong?
James: Knock your eyes out!

Asking about Freedom Necklace Card

Jenks: Ever seen one of these before? Freedom necklace?
James: Don’t think so.

Asking about Pub Broken Window

Jenks: Know anything about a broken window at the pub?
James: Don’t go to the pub.
Jenks: You’ve never been to the pub?
James: Didn’t say that. Been to the pub but not for about two months… three months.

Asking about Cardboard Mask

Jenks: Ever seen this before?
James: No, should I have?
Jenks: No, it’s OK.

Asking about A Pub Argument

Jenks: Know anything about an argument in the pub last Friday?
James: No…

Asking about Atlas Advertising Poster

Jenks: Ever seen one of these?
James: Seen them around college.
Jenks: What do you know about it?
James: Not much. It’s a business course, ask Simon. He’s on it.
Jenks: You wouldn’t be interested in that sort of thing?
James: No.
Jenks: And you haven’t discussed it with Simon?
James: Not really. Business doesn’t interest me.

Asking about Photo Frames & Paint

Jenks: Now what’s all this stuff in the workshop? Paint and stencils and things like that…?
James: Just a little sideline of mine.
Jenks: Oh, you do picture framing?
James: They’re black mirrors. Scrying mirrors.
Jenks: Now, what’s a scrying mirror?
James: Show you one if you want. Scrying goes back centuries. The ancient Persians did it. Pagan still practice it. Fortune tellers pretend to do it, that’s what the crystal ball’s all about. It’s all scrying. The mirror is just one way of doing it.
Jenks: But what is scrying?
James: Depends who you are. People do it for different reasons.
Jenks: What sort of reasons?
James: Exploring your mind… Clearing your mind… Communicating with the dead.
Jenks: Is that what you use them for, James? Communication with the dead?
James: I only make them for other people these days.
Jenks: And there’s a market for these is there?
James: Lots of people want to talk to the dead. Even if they don’t believe in it.
Jenks: Do you make a profit on them?
James: I don’t do it for the money.
Jenks: How very charitable of you! Can I keep this?
James: Keep it.
Jenks: Thank you.

Jenks (for himself): Black Mirrors and Hookah Pipes. I wonder what else James is into.

Jenks: Thank you. Probably be back later.

LET’S PAY REBECCA A VISIT

Asking about Atlas Advertising Poster

Jenks: What do you know about this?
Rebecca: It’s an advertisement. They had it designed by an agency, I think.
Jenks: And when was that?
Rebecca: Last year sometime.

Asking about Black ‘Scrying’ Mirror

Jenks: Have you seen one of these before?
Rebecca: Is it meant to be black like that?
Jenks: I think so.
Rebecca: No.
Jenks: That’s all for the moment. Thank you.

SIMON?

Asking about Black ‘Scrying’ Mirror

Jenks: Ever seen one of these before?
Simon: Yeah, that’s one of James’. He’s into New Age stuff, mysticism, magic spells, that sort of thing. He’s nuts though. He thinks the government is tracking him!
Jenks: Why would he think that?
Simon: I don’t know, you’d have to ask him.

EMMA KNOWS THINGS…

Asking about Black ‘Scrying’ Mirror

Jenks: Have you seen one of these before?
Emma: Is that from James?
Jenks: Now, what do you know about James?
Emma: That he’s creepy! He was selling them last Friday at the market, there’s a market every week… and I usually go there for lunch.
Jenks: So you wouldn’t buy one of these?
Emma: No, I wouldn’t, but Kate would.
Jenks: Was she into this sort of thing?
Emma: No, I don’t think so. She bought one and I went round to her flat to try it out. You’re meant to see ghosts or spirits or something, it doesn’t work.
Jenks: How do you use it?
Emma: You’re just meant to stare into it. Shall I show you?
Jenks: Go ahead.
Emma: OK. So you just… just stare like this… And er… Then you see…
Jenks: See what?
Emma: Sorry… Look… You’re meant to see a ghost or something… Look, it doesn’t work. Doesn’t work.

OVERTIME

Chief: Hello?
Jenks: Chief? Me again. A few things have come up. Met someone called James Wilson, bit of a drop out, into witchcraft, magic, occult things. Makes scrying mirrors.
Chief: What the heck is a crying mirror?
Jenks: Scrying, Chief. It’s an occult thing, black painted glass, you’re meant to stare into it until you see ghosts or something. Emma Bowman knew about it. They all know each other from college. Emma said he was selling these mirrors last Friday at the local market.
Chief: What was he doing Friday night?
Jenks: Not sure. Said he couldn’t remember the last time he saw Kate. Lives on his own so I doubt he has an alibi, but I can’t see any motive yet.
Chief: Well, look harder. And double check where everyone was last Friday night.
Jenks: Right. Thanks Chief.

YOU’RE NOT A VERY GOOD LIAR, EMMA

Finding a contradiction: James was selling them last Friday (Black Scrying Mirror) x Went Home to see Parent’s on Thursday (Kate’s Argument)

Jenks: So, you went home to see your parents on Thursday night, that’s right?
Emma: Er… yes.
Jenks: But you said you saw James at the market on Friday?
Emma: Erm… No, I went to see my parents on… Friday night.
Jenks: What time did you go on Friday?
Emma: Eight or nine.
Jenks: And you didn’t see Kate at all on Friday?
Emma: No.
Jenks: You’re not a very good liar, Emma!
Emma: OK… I saw Kate.
Jenks: Where?
Emma: At the pub, we were arguing.
Jenks: Go on, what were you arguing about?
Emma: I’d lent her £50 because she was desperate and we were just arguing… It didn’t really bother me, she just didn’t have it.
Jenks: And Kate broke the window?
Emma: Yes. She did things like that when she was angry.
Jenks: Smash things?
Emma: Yes.

Jenks (for himself): So it was Emma arguing with Kate. But why didn’t she want to admit it? In case it gave her a motive? Or something else?

Finding a contradiction: Kate bought lots of new jewelry (Broken Pendant) x Lent Money to Kate because she needed it (Kate’s Argument)

Jenks: So you lent money to Kate because she was desperate, but she bought loads of jewellery and things? So why were you lending her money?
Emma: Well, no, it’s because… It’s…
Jenks: It wasn’t about money, was it, Emma.
Emma: No.
Jenks: Go on. What was it really about?
Emma: We were arguing because she was going to blackmail Ryan, the guy from Atlas, over an affair he was having and then tell his wife if he didn’t give her the money.
Jenks: Ryan’s affair with Kate?
Emma: I don’t know. I think he was having an affair with another student and Kate found out.
Jenks: And why were you involved?
Emma: Because I didn’t really agree with it. I didn’t agree with what she was doing, even if he did have an affair.
Jenks: Were you friends with Ryan?
Emma: No, I’d never met him.
Jenks: You just thought Kate was wrong?
Emma: Yeah.
Jenks (for himself): Hmm not sure about this. Emma went on a moral crusade or there’s another reason she was worried about Kate blackmailing Ryan?

Finding a contradiction: Never met Ryan (Kate’s Argument) x Went to a Seminar with Simon (Atlas Advirtising Poster)

Jenks: You said you went to an Atlas meeting with Simon?
Emma: Yes.
Jenks: That’s interesting because I happen to know that Ryan is the main lecturer at Atlas, but you say you’ve never met him. Why did you say you don’t know him?
Emma: OK, I need to tell you something, I just need to make sure Simon doesn’t find out.
Jenks: I won’t be telling Simon anything he doesn’t have to hear.
Emma: And you can’t tell Rebecca either.
Jenks: Go on…?
Emma: OK… The affair that happened… was between Ryan and I. I was having the affair and Kate knew.
Jenks: So Kate was blackmailing both of you?
Emma: No. She didn’t care about me. It was part of the course, having to take all these risks. She thought it was funny to turn it back on Ryan. She thought I wouldn’t care.
Jenks: But you did.
Emma: Yes. I was already with Simon when Ryan and I… You know… And… I didn’t want Simon finding out, and Kate thought he wouldn’t, but I didn’t want her risking it. Then if Rebecca found out, then Simon would have definitely found out, and it would have blown up and… It would have just been a big mess.
Jenks: So you just argued and… what?
Emma: Well, she just stormed off and broke a window.
Jenks: And that was it? You didn’t see her again that night?
Emma: No.
Jenks: Are you sure?
Emma: Yes. I promise.
