Control

About the game

Release Year: 2019
Studio: Remedy Entertainment
Writers: Sam Lake (creative director and lead writer) and Mikko Rautalahti (co-writer, continuing their collaboration from Alan Wake)

Introduction:
Control is a third-person action-adventure game where players embody Jesse Faden, a woman who becomes the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a secretive agency investigating paranormal phenomena. Set within the ever-shifting Brutalist architecture of the Oldest House in New York, Jesse battles the Hiss, a malevolent, reality-warping force that has possessed the Bureau’s staff. Gameplay blends supernatural powers like telekinesis, a shape-shifting Service Weapon, and environmental destruction with exploration of a nonlinear, labyrinthine world filled with secrets.

Why the Writing Matters:
The narrative excels through layered, fragmented storytelling delivered via audio logs, memos, live-action videos, and in-world documents that players collect and interpret. Sam Lake’s script weaves cosmic horror, bureaucracy, and personal trauma into a meta-fictional tapestry, where Jesse’s internal monologue and interactions with eccentric FBC agents reveal deeper mysteries about altered world events and otherworldly entities. Dialogue is sparse but purposeful, emphasizing ambiguity and discovery, making writing the scaffold for player-driven revelations and emotional investment in Jesse’s fractured journey.
