Resident Evil 8: Village

About the game

Release Year: 2021
Studio: Capcom
Writer: Antony Johnston

Introduction:
Resident Evil Village is a first-person survival horror game that follows Ethan Winters to a remote, snow-covered European village after his wife Mia is apparently killed and his daughter Rose is kidnapped. The game blends classic Resident Evil puzzle and exploration loops with more action-driven segments across four major domains, Castle Dimitrescu, House Beneviento, Moreau’s reservoir, and Heisenberg’s factory, each ruled by a grotesque “lord” serving Mother Miranda. A merchant called the Duke, weapon upgrades, and crafting give it a gothic, almost fairy-tale tone layered over body horror and folklore.

Why the Writing Matters:
The narrative reframes bioweapon horror as a dark folk tale about parenthood, sacrifice, and identity. Ethan’s journey becomes both a rescue mission and a gradual revelation about his own nature and his family’s link to the mold introduced in RE7. Environmental notes, murals, and village legends quietly explain how Miranda’s grief over her dead child led to experiments with the megamycete, turning the four lords into tragic monsters instead of simple bosses. Dialogue and characterisation, especially Lady Dimitrescu’s aristocratic menace, Heisenberg’s sardonic scheming, and the villagers’ fatalism, create a strong sense of place, while the structure of collecting Rose’s fragmented body turns story beats into mechanical objectives. This close weave between lore documents, boss arenas, and Ethan’s personal stakes shows how writing can support both pacing and emotional payoff in a more action-leaning entry.
